You may have trouble figuring out which one you have, or whether it’s relevant to consider an upgrade in your internet connection type. A quick skip through the valley of wireless connection possibilities will leave you fully empowered with the knowledge of what these devices mean and do, and how they’re different from each other. Your ability to decide on upgrades and other changes in computer hardware and software is directly linked to what you know about what’s out there in the market, after all, so don’t be scared to learn a little.
Laptops don’t have the room to fit these big standard cards in them! So they use a mini wireless card instead. A mini wireless card is so small that you won’t even see it on the outside, it’s simply a little square chip built in to the hardware of the machine. Most laptops come with these already, so nine times out of ten buying a laptop takes care of your internet connection issues automatically. Of course, if someone fries the mini wireless card, you’ll have a devil of a time replacing it, unlike a regular card which is easy to remove.
The newest addition to the internet access product market is the USB wireless device. Like all USB devices, it’s very small, very light, and designed for ease of use and portability. You plug it in to a computer USB port, and voila! You have net access. By taking your internet with you easily instead of attaching it to a specific computer irrevocably, you enjoy a variety of benefits the other, less new options couldn’t provide. These devices are also cheap, despite their benefits, due to ease of manufacturing. However, since they don’t directly outperform the other options available, if you have a computer that already has a different form of wireless access, you may not want to spend the extra money on a USB wireless access card.
So from what you can see here, many types of wireless access will depend on what your computer is, and pretty much take care of themselves. But if you don’t have internet access currently, a USB device is probably your best choice for overall benefits to cost ratio.
